Different types of pressure vessel

Pressure vessels can be of any shape, but in most cases they are made up of cones, cylinders or spheres. The cylinder is still the most common shape, its end cap is referred to as head, and there are also different shapes. While other shapes can be used, they  are avoided because they are harder to build and harder to secure.

A sphere is an ideal shape for making pressure vessels, but it is expensive to make because of the complex problems involved. As a result, cylindrical shapes are more common used, even though their width increases the cost.

Spherical Pressure Vessel

This special pressure vessel is ideal for storing high pressure liquids.A spherical structure is very sturdy because the stress is evenly distributed on its surface, both inside and outside. So it eliminates all the weaknesses, but it is also true that they are much more expensive to make than their cylindrical counterparts.

They also need auxiliary equipment such as storage tanks. For example, access to a vacuum/pressure vent or manhole can prevent the loss of air pressure by changing the contact point, daily temperature, access to a ladder, or boiling the loss of exhaust.

A major advantage of spherical pressure vessels over other shaped vessels is that they have a smaller surface area per unit volume. This means that less heat is transferred to the liquid in the ball from a warmer environment than from a rectangular or cylindrical container.

Cylindrical Pressure Vessels

As this particular shape of pressure vessels is less expensive to produce, they are widely used for storage. Nonetheless, it should be noted that cylinders don’t have the same strength as spheres because they have a weak point at each end.

It is possible to reduce this weakness by opting for fitted rounded or hemispherical ends. If a thicker material is used for manufacturing the whole cylinder, then it can have the same storage pressure as that of a spherical pressure vessel.
